The Brandon School Division is holding a byelection on Oct. 16 to fill a vacant board trustee position in Ward 1.

Former trustee Blaine Foley announced his resignation earlier this year during the board’s general meeting in March, ending his tenure of nearly four and a half years. At that time, Foley cited his pursuit of a teaching career and the need to avoid professional conflicts as the primary reasons for stepping down.

The nomination period begins Sept. 4, but information is available now about the role of the trustee as well as the nomination process.

Certain criteria must be met to be considered an eligible candidate, Brandon’s senior election official, Heather Ewasiuk, said in a Wednesday news release.

“They must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older on the day of the byelection, and they must have resided in Brandon for a minimum of six months before the byelection date,” Ewasiuk said.

“Persons interested in running for trustee must also submit — prior to the nomination deadline — their completed nomination papers including a declaration and statement of disclosure.”

The candidate must sign the nomination papers and include the verified signatures of a minimum of 25 electors of the ward.

Potential candidates who do not meet the above requirements will not be allowed to run, the news release added.

The Brandon Votes election office will open Aug. 20.
