All three Spruce Woods byelection candidates are set to face off in a debate later this month.
The debate is slated for Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Sprucewoods Community Hall in Sprucewoods. Invitations were sent out to candidates on Thursday.
The debate is being hosted by The Brandon Sun, Brandon University and Westman Communications Group.
Candidates of the Spruce Woods byelection, which is slated for Aug. 26, had all previously tentatively agreed to the debate.
“It’s an opportunity for rural Manitoba to get more of a voice and to be heard across the province right now,” said Sun editor Matt Goerzen. “Spruce Woods is a bit of an urban and rural split. It’s a wide riding, there’s a lot of different kinds of communities in it.”
Goerzen said this debate will touch on topics important to residents themselves, and that candidates won’t just speak about topics they want to talk about.
“It’s agricultural as well as urban. It’s got a unique perspective that isn’t everywhere else in this province,” he said. “I think that the candidates are going to have to be on their A game in order to win over the public.”
The 90-minute debate is open to the public, and will be shown on WCGtv Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., Aug. 22 at 8 p.m., and Aug. 23 at 2:30 p.m. The Sun will also provide coverage and commentary.
The debate is set to be between Liberal candidate Stephen Reid, Progressive Conservative candidate Colleen Robbins and NDP candidate Ray Berthelette.
The panelists are Brandon University political science professor Kelly Saunders, Sun columnist Deveryn Ross and Sun politics reporter Alex Lambert. It will be officiated by Kerry Auriat.
