Nominations are now closed for the Aug. 26 byelection in the Spruce Woods constituency, with advance voting beginning Saturday, says Elections Manitoba.
Three candidates are chasing a seat in the Manitoba legislature, which was left vacant by Progressive Conservative Grant Jackson, who resigned in March to run in the federal election.
Ray Berthelette is running for the governing NDP. Stephen Reid is carrying the Liberal banner and Colleen Robbins is hoping to keep the seat blue for the Progressive Conservatives.
Berthelette is a former real estate agent who recently worked as an executive assistant to cabinet minister Glen Simard.
Reid is a high school teacher in Brandon, and Robbins is a former nurse and longtime Tory volunteer.
Eligible voters must live in the riding and be 18 years of age or older on election day. They must be Canadian citizens and have lived in Manitoba for at least six months.
Voters can cast their ballot at any advance polling station in the riding.
People can vote from Aug. 16-25 at the election office at the Corral Centre at 811 18th St. North (Unit 3) in Brandon, Aug. 16-23 at the Glenboro Raystone Memorial Centre at 214 Broadway St. in Glenboro and Aug. 19 and 20 at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex at 32 Third Ave. West.
Other places to vote in advance on Aug. 19 only are:
• CFB Shilo — Sprucewoods Community Club at 5 Woods Ave.
• Holland — Holland Community Centre at 136 Broadway St.
• Kemnay — Kemnay Recreational Centre in Kemnay at 6 Irving Pl.
• Oak Lake — Royal Canadian Legion at 291 Assiniboine St.
• Rivers — Royal Canadian Legion at 633 Second Ave.
• Wawanesa — Wawanesa Community Hall at 202 Fourth St.
Advance polling station voting hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. except Sunday, which is noon to 6 p.m.
On election day, eligible voters can vote at any of the polls — including the local election office — from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
People who have already registered to vote would have received a voter information card through the mail, which has instructions on where and when to vote.
Those without a voter information card can register online and download one from Elections Manitoba’s website at https://www.electionsmanitoba.ca/en.
To register online, you will need ID to prove you are eligible, like a driver’s licence.
People can still vote even without a registration card by bringing government-issued photo ID, like a driver’s licence, or two other pieces of ID.
For more information, call 204-945-3225, toll-free at 1-866-628-6837 or send an email to election@elections.mb.ca.
Spruce Woods has been a PC stronghold since it was created in 2011. Jackson won in 2023 with more than 61 per cent of the vote, while the NDP received 24 per cent of the vote and the Liberals 14 per cent.
