RAPID CITY — The dust, the cheers, and the thrill of competition filled the Rapid City Rodeo grounds this weekend as young competitors from across the province showcased their talents in the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association’s summer event.

For two days, the rodeo arena was alive with action — from junior events like breakaway roping, goat tying, and barrel racing, to senior competitions that tested skill and grit in saddle bronc riding, team roping, calf roping and bull riding.

The event is all about rodeo, event organizer Joe Wright told the Sun.

“We’ve got junior and senior events running through the weekend, and today we’ll wrap up with bull riding to round out the day,” he said.

The rodeo began Saturday at 10 a.m., resumed at 1:45 p.m., and continued Sunday at 10 a.m. The family-friendly atmosphere also featured children’s games and a community gathering that drew parents, grandparents and rodeo fans from the town.

The Manitoba High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA) has seen steady growth in recent years, with membership climbing to nearly 100 young riders. “The association gained 30 new members this year alone, which is really encouraging,” Wright said.

Spectator turnout was strong, with an estimated 300 to 400 people in attendance over the weekend. While most came to cheer on family members, the rodeo also drew plenty of locals eager to watch the province’s rising stars in action.

The Rapid City Rodeo, which has been hosted on and off for the past five or six years, is now firmly re-established. Last year’s event took place in May, but organizers moved it to August this year.

“We haven’t changed much other than making arena improvements and purchasing new bucking chutes,” Wright explained. “The main thing is keeping the event running smoothly and making sure all our competitors get home safe.”
