SUSPECT IN CUSTODY AFTER FATAL SHOOTING

A man is in custody after a fatal shooting in Waywayseecappo First Nation on Sunday.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, died in the hospital after he was shot in what police say was a “targeted incident.”

Ferlin Bone

Manitoba First Nations Police Service were notified of a shooting in the community at around 6:15 p.m.

When police arrived at the residence, they found the victim with a gunshot wound, RCMP said in a news release on Wednesday.

He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services were notified and took over the homicide investigation.

Police identified a suspect who left the residence after the shooting in a red SUV. Officers found the vehicle abandoned outside of the community.

The victim and the suspect were known to each other, RCMP said.

On Wednesday afternoon, RCMP issued a warrant for the arrest for Ferlin Bone, 32, for second-degree murder.

Bone surrendered to First Nation Police Services and is now in custody, RCMP said in an update later in the day.

RCMP SEIZE FIREARMS FROM DAUPHIN HOME

Dauphin RCMP arrested a 16-year-old boy and a 49-year-old woman on Monday after they allegedly found firearms, ammunition and crime paraphernalia during a search of their home.

Dauphin RCMP received a report on Sunday at around 10 p.m. that the youth had threatened a 15-year-old boy with a weapon during a video chat, RCMP said in a news release on Wednesday.

Officers executed a search warrant on Monday at a residence on Davidson Avenue West in Dauphin.

Police seized multiple firearms, which were unsafely stored, a prohibited magazine, a conducted energy weapon and organized crime paraphernalia, the release said.

The boy and woman were arrested on scene and face multiple charges, which were not included in the news release.

The pair were released on undertakings and will appear in court.

Dauphin RCMP continue to investigate.

PUBLICATION BAN ERROR

Manitoba Courts mistakenly attached a publication ban to a manslaughter verdict on Tuesday.

Rennie Williams was convicted of manslaughter after she fatally stabbed her cousin, Naomi Williams, in 2022.

A copy of Justice Elliot Leven’s written decision released on Tuesday stated a publication ban was in effect on any information that could identify the deceased victim or the witnesses in the case.

The Sun published the story in Wednesday’s paper, without naming the accused or the victim because of the erroneous ban.

Manitoba Courts told the Sun Wednesday that a publication ban had been previously ordered in relation to a voir dire and that the judge’s written decision would be reissued without the publication ban.
