Local actors from Assiniboine Theatre Company will take on the roles of several people interred in the Brandon Municipal Cemetery during interactive walking tours on Saturday and Sunday. They will be dressed in period-appropriate clothing and portray different historical figures from the Wheat City’s past. Guides will also share short stories and historical facts throughout the tour.

Tours are scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Refreshments follow each performance.

Participation is limited, says Lisa Hammond of Brockie Donovan Funeral Home. Admission is $20 per person, with registration required in advance by calling 204-727-0694.

The tours, which have been staged in the cemetery since 2007, give visitors a chance to go back in time and meet the colourful and inspiring individuals who helped shape the city, said Hammond.

“The characters of Brandon’s past will literally come alive to tell their tales and offer some juicy bits of gossip to those plucky participants who venture through their hallowed resting grounds,” she said.

All the funds raised from Gossip in the Graveyard go straight to charity. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $36,000, with benefactors that include the Alzheimer Society, Westman Dreams for Kids, the Women’s Resource Centre and Westman Hospice Association.

This year’s donation will go to the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, Hammond said.

“We’ll be supporting local artists in our community while educating and entertaining the participants. It’s a perfect fit.”
