No charges will be laid against an RCMP officer who shot and seriously wounded a woman during her arrest in the RM of North Cyprus-Langford in May.

Carberry RCMP received a complaint of a person “acting erratically and walking in traffic” on the Trans-Canada Highway on May 12 at around 9:21 p.m., the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a news release on Monday.

Officers arrived on the scene and told the woman she was under arrest. She was non-compliant and had an edged weapon, the IIU said.

The officer shot the woman, and she was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre for treatment and later transferred to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, the release said.

The RCMP notified the IIU of the incident on the same day.

Since the woman sustained injuries during the arrest, the IIU assumed responsibility of the investigation and IIU investigators were assigned to it, the release said.

Seven civilian witnesses gave statements to police, and investigators spoke with the injured woman.

After considering the circumstances, the IIU said the civilian director will not be authorizing charges.

Since the injured woman remains before the courts for charges that arose from the incident, the civilian director’s report will be available once the charges are dealt with, the IIU said.
