The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is hosting an opening reception this evening to showcase three new exhibitions featuring homegrown artists — two who attended high school in Brandon.

Kevin Conlin is a ceramic artist, instructor and amateur paleontologist who has pieces that have been shown and collected around the world, the gallery said in a news release.

After graduating from Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School in 1979, Conlin took ceramic training at the University of Northern Arizona and the University of Regina and taught at Brandon University.

He has also worked collecting fossils for the Canadian Museum of Natural History and the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta.

Conlin’s current exhibition, called “Ancestral Aviators,” will be featured in the main gallery at the AGSM.

It’s an installation that transports viewers to a future museum. Fossilized traces of humanity are displayed alongside remnants of extinct creatures, which encourages people to reflect on connecting the past and future, the release said.

Conlin will be in Brandon and at the gallery on Oct. 25 to host a public tour of his exhibition, offering insights to his work.

The second exhibition, titled “8 Rooms,” was initiated by filmmaker and animator Anita Lebeau, who is a 1979 graduate of École secondaire Neelin High School.

Lebeau collaborated with Manitoba artists Diana Thorneycroft, Shirley Brown and Seema Goel. The exhibition features eight dream-like miniature spaces, with influences from Lebeau’s animated short that she created in 2022, also called “8 Rooms.”

Lebeau and her three collaborator-artists will be available to take the public on a guided tour on Friday, walking people through the creative processes behind the spaces.

The third installation is in the Kayes Family Community Gallery.

“I Couldn’t Have Done It Without You” features 15 artists who call themselves the Free Flow Artist Collective, the gallery said.

The artists in the collective drew inspiration from their community through collaboration and encouragement.

Tonight’s reception starts at 7 p.m.

All gallery events are open to the public and free of charge. For more information about any of the exhibitions, email curator@agsm.ca or call 204-727-1036.
