A violent offender unit made up of officers from the Manitoba RCMP and the Winnipeg Police Service marked the milestone of 850 arrests after its latest operation in western Manitoba.

The Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU) travelled to three communities in western Manitoba to find and arrest “prolific and violent” offenders with outstanding warrants, RCMP said in a news release Friday.

RCMP officers from the Winnipegosis RCMP and Yellowhead detachments, the drone unit and Manitoba First Nations Police Officers from Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation helped with the operation that resulted in the arrests of six violent offenders with outstanding warrants, the release said.

Three of the arrests took place in Keeseekowenin Ojibwe First Nation and the other three in Snownan First Nation.

MIVOAU went to 35 locations and executed six warrants in the process.

Since its inception in 2023, the unit has made 850 arrests.

Sgt. James Ries said the unit is contributing to safer streets in communities across the province.

“Violent and prolific offenders with outstanding warrants are continually trying to evade police by moving from community to community,” Ries said. “However, with this joint unit readily sharing intelligence and resources, there’s no doubt it’s becoming harder for them to hide.”
