SEXUAL ASSAULT

A Brandon man was arrested on Friday for the sexual assault of a female child.

Brandon Police Service received a complaint of a historical sexual assault of a female child by a 42-year-old man on March 26.

The accused is expected to appear in court on Dec. 3 on charges of sexual assault and sexual interference.

DRUNK DRIVING

Brandon Police Service arrested a 44-year-old female on Saturday for driving while over the legal limit of alcohol.

An employee of a business in the 1600 block of 18th Street reported the suspect to the police on Saturday afternoon.

Police found the suspect as she arrived home and say she provided breath-alcohol samples that were more than three times the legal limit. She was later released to a sober family member and will appear in court today.

BODILY HARM

A 25-year-old Brandon female was arrested on Saturday for assault causing bodily harm and mischief to property under $5,000.

Police said that during an argument, a woman pushed her boyfriend and damaged items such as a TV and computer monitor, and later dropped a safe on his foot, resulting in a broken toe.

The accused was released to appear in court on Nov. 27.

SPINOFF NEARLY READY

Maple Leaf Foods is expected to complete the spinoff of its pork operations into a new publicly traded company, Canada Packers Inc., on Oct. 1.

The move, approved by shareholders and the courts earlier this year, will see Maple Leaf Foods retain a 16 per cent stake in Canada Packers, with the remaining shares distributed to investors of record as of September 30. Each Maple Leaf Foods shareholder will receive 0.2 Canada Packers shares for every common share held, the company’s press release issued on Friday stated.

In total, over 29.7 million Canada Packers shares will be issued at closing, with approximately 25 million shares allocated to shareholders and nearly 4.8 million retained by Maple Leaf Foods.

To manage the transition, it stated, the Toronto Stock Exchange will introduce special trading rules. Maple Leaf Foods shares will trade with “due bills” under the symbol MFI on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. At the same time, provisional trading will be available for both Maple Leaf Foods ex-distribution shares (MFI.W) and Canada Packers shares (CPKR). Regular trading for both companies begins on Oct. 2.

The release stated some investors may see delays in receiving their Canada Packers shares, depending on how they hold their Maple Leaf Foods stock. Guidance on adjusted cost base allocation will be posted later this year.
