The ongoing Canada Post strike is disrupting the delivery of key Manitoba Public Insurance documents, creating delays for thousands of customers awaiting annual statements, cheques and driver’s licences.

Statements for driver’s licences, vehicle registration and insurance will not be delivered until the strike is resolved, the corporation said in a press release Monday.

Customers are still responsible for making payments by their due dates, and should pay online, by phone, in person at an Autopac broker or at an MPI service centre, the release said.

MPI added that while most drivers only need to visit a service centre or broker once every five years to renew their licence or policy, they are still required to pay annually. Years between renewals are considered reassessment years, and customers must track due dates carefully — typically four months after their birthday. Those unsure of their renewal year should check the expiry date on their current driver’s licence or ID card.

The strike is also causing delays for cheques from MPI. Customers who did not receive cheques expected the week of Sept. 22 are advised to contact their case owner, adjuster or MPI directly, depending on the type of claim or payment.

Starting Friday, cheques for injury claims, physical damage claims, refunds, International Registration Plan payments and Manitoba Electric Vehicle rebates will be available for pickup at the nearest MPI service or claim centre. Identification will be required to collect cheques.

New and renewed driver’s licences and identification cards will not be mailed during the strike. Customers are advised to hold on to temporary licences and condition documents until their permanent cards arrive. If temporary documents are nearing expiry, customers can request replacements at a broker or service centre to maintain a valid driving status. Urgent identification needs can also be addressed in person at MPI locations.

Personalized and specialty licence plates are also affected, with deliveries suspended until mail service resumes.

MPI is encouraging customers with questions about payments, cheques or renewal status to contact its customer contact centre at 204-985-7000 or toll-free at 1-800-665-2410.
