Fire crews are investigating a blaze that consumed a garage and vehicle near Victoria Avenue in Brandon on Wednesday, setting off what witnesses described as small explosions.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services received a call about the fire at 453 16th St. around 4:40 p.m.

BFES Chief Terry Parlow said the fire crew was cleaning up the scene and packing up at 6:15 p.m.

He said officials would be investigating the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage Wednesday and into this morning.

From blocks away, black billowing smoke was visible in the sky. Neighbours and pedestrians stopped to get a closer look and took pictures with their phones. Some said they heard small explosive sounds.

Firefighters sprayed water at the garage from the back lane. Inside the garage, the charred frame of a vehicle was visible.

Several cadet cars, police cars and a fire truck were parked at the scene to block traffic and make sure nobody got too close to the fire.
