A fire that engulfed a garage on Wednesday near Victoria Avenue was caused by a pail of ashes, police say.

The fire in the back lane of the 400 block of 16th Street was reported at around 4:40 p.m.

Both Brandon & Fire Emergency Services and Brandon Police Service members responded to the scene.

The homeowner allegedly had placed a pail of ashes against the two-car garage, thinking that they had cooled off, BPS said in a news release Thursday.

The ashes reignited, which caused the garage to catch fire, destroying the structure and the vehicle inside, BPS said. The fire also damaged a nearby fence.

Police said no injuries were reported.
