TODAY
• 10 a.m. — The annual Halloween Hop continues in the city until Oct. 31, offering the community a chance to enjoy frightful fun while supporting local charities. Taking part in the festivities are Alternative Choice Garden (34th Street and Patricia Avenue), The Green Spot (1451 Rosser Ave.) and Livingstone Outdoor (1619 Byng Ave.). Each location has prepared festive displays and seasonal attractions. The Green Spot has created a bale maze with every $5 entry fee going toward Habitat for Humanity. Livingstone Outdoor is hosting its popular Haunted House now until Saturday and Oct. 27-30 with eerie rooms, special effects and jump scares tonight from 6 to 10 p.m., and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For younger visitors, a special “no-scare” hour will run nightly from 6 to 7 p.m. Admission $10 for ages 12 and up; $7 for children under 12 with proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westman and Habitat for Humanity. Alternative has a haunted greenhouse selfie station, storybook corner and game zone with Yardzee, Tic-Tac-Toe and more. Family pass $10 with 100 per cent of proceeds to Westman Dreams for Kids. On Friday from 1-4 p.m., the Brandon Wheat Kings will visit to meet fans and take photos. Participants can pick up a Halloween Hop passport at any of the three businesses.

• Noon — Join the Brandon Public Library and the Brandon General Museum and Archives as we investigate some of the darker parts of our city’s history on the Dark History Tours. This walking tour will delve into the more grisly pieces of our past including epidemics, murders, deadly accidents and other shocking stories from the “good” old days of the Wheat City. • 8 a.m. — The Enlightenment Network presents Resilience Rewired with keynote speaker Dr. Jody Carrington at the Keystone Centre. Resilience Rewired focuses on psychology, technology and the human spirit. • 10 a.m. — Brandon’s Big One Arts and Craft Sale is back for its 36th annual edition at the Keystone Centre. You can find 175 booths filled with talented artisans, makers, bakers and food vendors from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, all showcasing their handmade creations. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission at the door is $5; children 12 and under are admitted free. Part of the proceeds from the door go to the BRHC Foundation and CancerCare Brandon.
• 11:30 a.m. — Spruce Woods Housing Co-op’s 40th anniversary celebration family event will take place at the North End Community Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., which includes a bubble show and carnival games. In conversation with curator Lucie Lederhendler, Conlin will elaborate on his interdisciplinary practice, which spans paleontology, sociology, antiquity and play.
• 5 p.m. — “Orchestra in the Forest: Brass and Timber — Sounds of Resilience” takes place at Danceland in Clear Lake from 5 to 10 p.m. Beneath the soaring timbers of Danceland, in the shadows of the Second World War, big band and swing became the soundtrack of the era, a symbol of joy and resilience amid loss, longing and the weight of war. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will revive the sounds that carried a nation through its darkest hours, while Danceland’s chefs reimagine the era in a culinary journey of foraged flavours and prairie resilience. • Day— Join us at the Assiniboine Credit Union Agricultural Centre inside the Keystone Centre for Manitoba AG EX taking place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1. This is the province’s largest all-breeds cattle show which draws top breeders, livestock exhibitors and industry leaders from across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Highlights include Little Lady Classic, Jackpot Bull Show, Junior Show and Showmanship and the prestigious Supreme Breed Extravaganza, where breed champions go head-to-head for the title before advancing to the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

• Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and gift shop that supports more than 60 local Manitoba artists. In the Main Gallery are two exhibitions: “8 Rooms,” featuring the animated film by Anita Lebeau, and seven other Manitoba artists, and “Ancestral Aviators,” by Kevin Conlin on display until Nov. 22. “Healing For The Broken Hearted,” features art from inside Manitoba’s prisons, sponsored by the Manitoba Multifaith Council Justice and Corrections Committee, on display in the Kayes Community Gallery until Dec. 13. • Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Open seven days a week from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum will remain open until Remembrance Day (Nov. 11) with a free open house and reopen again April 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. Our gallery has new interpretive displays explaining the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War-vintage hangar serving as a display for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. RCAF members who lost their lives during the Second World War are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. • Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Discover “WWII Command Posts,” a temporary exhibit at the RCA Museum, showcasing Canada’s mobile command vehicles and their role in co-ordinating artillery and communications during the Second World War. • Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — Killarney-Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. • Oct. 30-Nov. 1— Join us at the Assiniboine Credit Union Agricultural Centre inside the Keystone Centre for Manitoba AG EX. This is the province’s largest all-breeds cattle show which draws top breeders, livestock exhibitors and industry leaders from across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Highlights include Little Lady Classic, Jackpot Bull Show, Junior Show and Showmanship and the prestigious Supreme Breed Extravaganza, where breed champions go head-to-head for the title before advancing to the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. Party in the Dirt, featuring Prairieline Band, will take place on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. This will be a night filled with country music, dancing and Halloween fun. This is an 18+ event. Tickets $10.
• Oct. 31— United Way is hosting a Spookghetti Luncheon — Community Lunch at the Victoria Inn from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tickets are $35 and should be registered by Oct. 24! Games and prizes, 50/50 draw, raffle table and the thrilling return of Expressions Entertainment. Costumes are encouraged — festive spirit mandatory.
• Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 — The Brandon University Bobcats volleyball teams host Mount Royal University at the Healthy Living Centre (2010 Louise Ave.) Women’s game starts at 6 p.m on Oct. 31 and 5 p.m. on Nov. 1., followed by the men at 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 31 and 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 1.
• Oct. 31— Bethel Brandon (440 Richmond Ave.) will be hosting a Fall Carnival from 6 to 8 p.m. This is a family-friendly, free event. Everyone is welcome. Activities include carnival games, bouncy castle, hot dogs, tons of candy as well as cotton candy and popcorn.
• Oct. 31— Scare Away Hunger on Cedar Bay in Brandon. This is a must see for all those who enjoy the thrills of Halloween! Cedar Hollow offers full scare hours from 6 to 9 p.m. nightly. This event is a food drive for Samaritan House Ministries so please bring a non-perishable item for donation.
• Nov. 1 — Craft sale will be held at Brandon Seniors for Seniors (311 Park Ave. East) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission. Freshly brewed coffee and muffins available for purchase. Check out our crafts that includes various vendors from all over Brandon.
