Premier Wab Kinew has awarded the Order of the Buffalo Hunt to the City of Brandon, as well as its first responders and residents, for their help during the summer for wildfire evacuees.
Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett showed off the award and read the citation at Monday evening’s city council meeting.
“The holder of this certificate has shown leadership in furthering the pioneer qualities of enthusiasm, co-operation and fellowship worthy of the Officer of the Buffalo Hunt, and is held in high regard by the citizens of Manitoba,” it said.

More than 32,700 people were registered with the Canadian Red Cross during Manitoba’s 2025 wildfire season, the agency said. More than 12,600 homes were evacuated and two people died.
Along with the order bestowed by Kinew, Flin Flon Mayor George Fontaine gave Fawcett a letter thanking the city and its people for the support.
“In recognition, I just wanted to thank you and your city for everything you all did to provide for evacuees of Flin Flon,” Fontaine said in the letter.
“They’re very, very grateful for Brandon and what it did for them during those times,” Fawcett told people in attendance.
The Flin Flon letter came with carvings from an apple tree in Brandon.
