The City of Brandon will spend nearly $175,000 on a new wood chipper to help its public works department deal with tree and branch removal.

Council approved the $173,190.20 expense at its regular council meeting Monday evening. The matter went through council because the bid from Vermeer Canada Inc. was higher than expected.

To cover the full cost, council decided to take just over $23,000 from its gas tax reserve.

Public works director Pam Richardson told council the new industrial wood chipper will be shared with the parks department, which will be able to use it as a backup when there’s an excess of material.

“The wood chipper is going to be shared with the parks department to ensure that we’re getting full efficiency and optimization out of that unit,” Richardson told council.

The unit itself will cost the city $164,245. The balance of the spend is for an optional winch system.

Vermeer Canada Inc. was the only company to place a bid for the equipment.
