Newly elected school trustee Shawna Mozdzen was sworn in Monday evening at a special meeting of the Brandon School Division board of trustees.
In the formal ceremony, Mozdzen stood to take the oath of office, raising her right hand and solemnly affirming to “faithfully perform her duties and uphold the trustee code of ethics as a trustee of the Brandon School Division.”
Secretary-treasurer Denis Labossiere conducted the ceremony and witnessed the signing of documents in compliance with the Public Schools Act.

Mozdzen, who secured a decisive victory in the Oct. 16 Ward 1 byelection, said she was excited to begin serving on the board.
“I’d like to get started and just work as a board — bring everyone together at the same table and come to great decisions as a board,” she told the Sun after the ceremony.
Regarding her priorities, Mozdzen said she intends to speak up for students and staff.
“Just have my voice heard and speak to what I believe in, like I always do, and just try to do everything that’s right for the students and staff.”
Mozdzen, a school support and educational assistant, received 2,229 votes — 56.7 per cent of the total — in the byelection, finishing well ahead of six other candidates: Henry Sieklicki, Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills and Eren Oleson.
Her campaign focused on creating a school environment where students and families feel “supported, included and safe.”
Of the 3,929 total votes, 596 were cast in advance polls and sealed ballots, according to the senior election official.
