VIOLENT ROBBERY

The Brandon Police Service is investigating a violent robbery that took place on Thursday.

BPS received a call from person at a business in the first block of Willowdale Drive who said they had been punched by an unknown individual and that the assailant stole some of their personal belongings, BPS said in a news release.

ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL HUNTING

An individual who was allegedly hunting in Riding Mountain National Park was arrested last month.

After a “lengthy and thorough” investigation, which was prompted after there was suspicious activity near the park’s south boundary, park wardens from RMNP executed two search warrants and arrested an individual from Elm Creek for illegal hunting activities in the park, RMNP said in a social media post on Monday.

The person faces several charges under the Canada National Parks Act and the Criminal Code, which include hunting within a national park, unlawful possession of a firearm in a national park, operating an ATV in a national park and careless use of a firearm.

Park wardens seized two ATVs, multiple firearms, ammunition and other hunting-related equipment, the post said.

Parks Canada said it will not be providing further details at this time because the matter is before the courts.

PROVINCIAL BUDGET SURVEY

The provincial government is asking people to fill out a survey to share their priorities for next year’s budget.

The online survey is open until Feb. 21 and can be found at engagemb.ca/budget-2026.

Along with the survey, people can participate in several town halls planned across the province, including one in Brandon on Feb. 12.

The online survey requires people to create an account on the government’s website. It includes questions about how important specific priorities — such as health care, education, cost of living and climate change — are to respondents. It also requires people to fill out questions about their demographics, including income, employment and race.

Adrien Sala, the province’s finance minister, said the NDP government is working to improve health care while keeping costs low and balancing the budget in the face of tariffs.

“Over the last two years, we’ve made good progress on your priorities. Now, we want to build on that work, starting by hearing directly from you,” Sala said in a press release on Thursday.

Other town halls include Winnipeg on Feb. 10, Flin Flon on Feb. 19, Gimli on Feb. 26, and telephone town halls on Feb. 11 and 17.

The 2026 budget is set to be released in the spring.
