Bundle up western Manitoba. Looks like the region is in for some heavy snow over the next 48 hours.

A Monday afternoon weather alert update from Environment Canada states that the Brandon region may receive up to 20 cm of snowfall by Wednesday morning, along with hazardous winter conditions.

A low pressure system from Alberta will travel through east-central Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba Tuesday evening into the Wednesday morning hours. The most notable hazard with this system will be accumulating snowfall, particularly over higher elevations in the Manitoba parklands regions.

Snowfall is expected to taper off Wednesday morning. Visibility may be suddenly reduced to near zero at times and road closures are possible.

Currently, a smaller system has already brought snow and blowing snow today, with conditions forcing the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway between Virden and the Saskatchewan border. This smaller snow fall was expected to bring about 5 cm of snow to Brandon.

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada stated that a narrow band of freezing rain is possible beginning Tuesday morning, extending from Kindersley to Estevan, presenting potential hazardous travel conditions. As the system progresses eastward, heavier snowfall is likely across southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba, including the parklands.
