5 p.m. — The glowing display of holiday lighting is now on at the Skating Oval immediately east of the Parks Complex at 2020 McGregor Ave. (also accessible via Hilton Avenue). The lights are on nightly from 5 to 11 p.m. throughout the winter season. No public vehicles are allowed in the direct area of the Waterfall of Lights display. Visitors are encouraged to park in the designated areas along McGregor Avenue or Hilton Avenue and enjoy the walk through this magical winter scene.

5 p.m. — The Chamber Music Class Concert with works by Darius Milhaud, Waldemar von Baussnern, Ilya Mishchenkov, W.A. Mozart and Clara Schumann under the direction of professors Kerry DuWors, Nancy Hennen and Megumi Masaki takes place at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Featuring pianists Darina Lavrukhina and Sunqiayo Zhang; clarinetist Jesse Barr and violinists Chufan Wang and Lee Martel. All are welcome. No admission charge.

6:30 p.m. — A Celebration of Music and Joy will be presented by the Meadows School Christmas Concert at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Tickets are available through the WMCA box office, at wmca.ca or by calling 204-728-9510.

9 a.m. — The Brandon Farmers’ Market takes place every Friday at The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave.) with seasonal produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, crafts and more until 4 p.m. This market runs year-round.

6 p.m. — Wild Spirits, a Winter Pop-up Dining Experience at the Lakehouse in Clear Lake. Takes place Dec. 12 and 13 and again on Dec. 19 and 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are available and booking is live on the Lakehouse website.

7:30 p.m. — Two of Westman’s premier choirs are teaming up to present “December Lights,” an evening of choral music. 10:30 a.m. — The Downtown Library Branch (710 Rosser Ave.) invites you to Investigate It! Become a forensic scientist and investigate the whodunit by examining clues left at the scene. Learn how to interpret evidence by exploring fabric samples and running a chemical analysis on a mystery solution. 8 a.m. — Westman Naturalists’ annual Christmas Bird Count will take place in and around Brandon starting at 8 a.m. This is a chance to take part in a North America-wide count of birds during the winter season, either by watching your feeder or getting out to search for birds within a circle around Brandon. This year’s festive program bursts with the classics and also includes film favourites in a Christmas at the Movies medley and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Juno-nominated duo Erin Propp and Larry Roy join the orchestra. Brandon University’s a cappella men’s ensemble, Invicta, adds rich vocal warmth. And special guest His Worship Mayor Jeff Fawcett will be narrating “’Twas the Night Before Christmas. Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and gift shop that supports more than 70 local Manitoba artists. In the Main Gallery is the 21st Annual Members’ Show and Sale on until Jan. 9. In the Kayes Community Gallery is “Healing For The Broken Hearted,” featuring art from inside Manitoba’s prisons, sponsored by the Manitoba Multifaith Council Justice and Corrections Committee, on display until Saturday. Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Discover “WWII Command Posts,” a temporary exhibit at the RCA Museum, showcasing Canada’s mobile command vehicles and their role in co-ordinating artillery and communications during the Second World War. Dec. 31 — Clear Lake’s most anticipated winter party is officially returning to the Lakehouse! 26 Below Zero Fire & Ice NYE Party is a New Year’s Eve designed for people who want a winter night with a pulse. This is not a soft, inside-only NYE – but a cold-weather destination version. Featuring fire pits throwing heat into the night; ice bars lighting up the patio; heated winter lounges; a food line-up to fuel the entire evening; drinks, energy and a midnight countdown! Dec. 31 — Ring in the New Year with the Rivers Curling Club! Live entertainment from The New Highway 25 Repaved at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available through a member of the curling club or at forms.gle/xaBiiMndgyWHzLDA6.

Dec. 31 — Come celebrate the New Year at Asessippi Ski Resort! Spend the evening skiing, tubing and celebrating under the stars with family and friends. Enjoy two fireworks shows: one at 9:15 p.m. and another at midnight. Join our annual Midnight Run down Easy Street and be a part of one of Asessippi’s favorite traditions. The Squirrel Chair will remain open until midnight and tubing until 8:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve Dinner Special is available for purchase before the countdown!

Jan. 8 — An Evening with Elton John takes place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. After a sold-out show in 2023, this high-energy Elton John tribute returns to Brandon for another unforgettable night of music, memories and pure showmanship.

Jan. 9-10 — The Brandon University Bobcats basketball teams host Winnipeg at the Healthy Living Centre (2010 Louise Ave.) Jan. 9, Women’s game at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Jan. 10, women’s at 5 p.m.; men’s at 7 p.m.

Jan. 9-11 — “No Other Choice” is playing at the Evans Theatre (Brandon University). A laid-off paper mill manager descends into violence. Admission is $7. Cash only. All concession items $2. Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m.

Jan. 13 — Join Jana Starling, clarinet and Allison Wiebe, piano for a pro series concert at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door. The recital will showcase hidden gems by Canadian composers, including Juno award-winning composer and fellow Brandon University alumna Jocelyn Morlock, as well as the unorthodox and imaginative Albertan composer Ian Crutchley.

Jan. 16-17 — The Brandon University Bobcats volleyball teams host Trinity Western University at the Healthy Living Centre (2010 Louise Ave.) Jan. 16, Men’s game at 6 p.m. followed by the women at 7:45 p.m. Jan. 17, men’s at 5 p.m.; women’s at 6:45 p.m.
