The City of Brandon and much of Westman is under an orange blizzard warning Wednesday morning, with 10 to 20 centimetres of snow, strong winds and low visibility expected to blanket the region.
North and northeasterly winds will reach up to 90 km/h because of an Alberta clipper, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is warning.
ECCC’s new orange colour-coded advisory means severe weather is likely to cause significant damage, disruption, or health impacts, with impacts being major and widespread. Orange advisories are uncommon.
Communities including Brandon, Dauphin, Virden, Killarney and Roblin are all under the orange blizzard watch, which extends all the way from the Alberta-Saskatchewan border to the Steinbach area.
In the Brandon region, the storm is expected to start in the afternoon and end during the daytime on Thursday.
Additionally, the Boissevain and Melita area is under a yellow freezing rain warning with one to two millimetres into the evening. Yellow watches are hazardous weather that may cause damage, disruption, or health impacts. The freezing rain watch extends into southern Saskatchewan.
The Swan River area is not under any weather watch, as of Wednesday morning.
ECCC is warning people in the orange blizzard regions to avoid travel and outdoor activities if possible.
