ASSAULT IN PROGRESS

A man who allegedly assaulted a woman — who he was on conditions not to have contact with — was arrested on Wednesday.

Police were sent to an apartment building on the 600 block of Pacific Avenue at around 6:15 a.m. after a report of an assault in progress.

When officers arrived, they found a 28-year-old woman in the lobby with visible injuries, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

Police said emergency medical services provided immediate care for the woman at the scene before transporting her to the hospital.

Officers found the 21-year-old suspect outside of the door to the woman’s apartment, where they arrested him without incident, BPS said.

Police secured the residence and ensured the safety of the two children that were present, the release said.

BPS said the children were cared for by the proper authorities, and a family friend stayed with them for support.

Police recovered a hatchet and a knife at the scene and found that the man was on a probation order with conditions that he not contact the woman, not go to her residence and not possess weapons, BPS said.

The man was later charged with two counts of assault — one for the woman and another for the older of the two children.

He was also charged with assault by choking, assault with a weapon and four counts of failing to comply with his probation order.

He was held in BPS detention cells and was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

PEPPER-SPRAY ATTACK AT MALL

The Brandon Police Service arrested a 14-year-old boy on Wednesday after he allegedly pepper-sprayed a man at a shopping mall.

BPS was called to Shoppers Mall at around 5:15 p.m. after a report of a fight outside of a store, during which a man was pepper-sprayed.

Two suspects fled the scene, but police found and apprehended them near the Brandon Municipal Cemetery, police said.

After further investigation, officers arrested a 14-year-old boy and charged him with assault with a weapon and administering a noxious substance.

He was later released on an undertaking with a court appearance scheduled in March.
