The Manitoba First Nations Police Service staff are set to move into their new Brandon headquarters next month.

The police service’s office team is scheduled to move in on Feb. 2, said Insp. Darryl Hunter, media relations with the MFNPS.

Hunter and police Chief Jason Colon started working out of the new digs on Monday.

The headquarters are located within the Waywayseecappo Convention Centre off Highway 10 near the Brandon Municipal Airport. It will replace the police service’s current offices near Portage la Prairie, at the site of a former residential school, which is slated to become a museum.

The February move comes after almost a year and a half of interior construction at the Brandon site. The work started in October 2024.

A lack of space was the primary reason that the police service needed new headquarters, Hunter told the Sun last year, adding that the service had been steadily adding staff to the point that the space grew cramped.

To illustrate the point, he said he had been working out of a “mini hallway.”

The police service foresees continued growth and chose the Brandon site to accommodate that.

As part of the 25,000-square-foot convention centre, the new headquarters will include three six-hour holding cells, an armoury and a large evidence room. There will be a large gym on the second floor, a training centre, several boardrooms and parking for 64 personnel.

Hunter said the police service plans to hold an event to mark the occasion, but had not yet settled on a date.
