TODAY

Day — The Skating Oval is open at 2020 McGregor Ave. The display of lights is immediately east of the Parks Complex at 2020 McGregor Ave. (also accessible via Hilton Avenue). The lights are on from 5 to 11 p.m. Warming shacks are operational from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. No public vehicles are allowed in the direct area of the Waterfall of Lights display. Visitors are encouraged to park in the designated areas along McGregor Avenue or Hilton Avenue and enjoy the walk through this magical winter scene.

9 a.m. — The North Hub Outdoor Rink (at Sportsplex, 30 Knowlton Dr., north parking lot) is open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Parking available in the south parking lot only. Washrooms are available through the west entrance of the Sportsplex and portable toilets will be available. This rink is not supervised — please skate respectfully and don’t forget your helmet!

9 a.m. — Calling all tobogganers: Hanbury Hill in Sir Winston Churchill Park (600 Braecrest Dr.) is open and ready for sledders. You can warm up in the gazebo, which is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The lights are on daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Other toboggan hills within the city include Rideau Park, Wheat City Golf Course/Recreation Centre. Smaller hills at 34th Street and Cherry Crescent sliding hill and Parkdale Park sliding hill.

9 a.m. — Ski Valley in Minnedosa is now open — all runs, all parks, all lifts, all fun. Located seven kilometres north of Minnedosa on Highway 10. 9 a.m. — The Brandon Farmers’ Market takes place every Friday at The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave.) with seasonal produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, crafts and more until 4 p.m. This market runs year-round.

9:30 a.m. — Asessippi Ski Resort (Provincial Trunk Highway 83, Inglis) is open this weekend. Plan your runs, tubing laps, chalet time and everything in between. Hours (which can change), tickets, updates and more at asessippi.com. Closed on Jan. 19 and 20.

Winter equipment rentals for fat tire bikes, snowshoes, snow tubes, belly boards and kicksparks are available.

Noon — The Winter GamesDay returns to Central Community Centre from noon to 10 p.m. PrairieCon GamesDays are fun, free events where anyone can come by and drop in to play some tabletop games. They are very casual open-gaming events with no scheduling or slots. If you see an open spot at a table, just ask if you can join in. Bring any kind of game you want, provided it is family-friendly. 6:30 p.m. — An art night is being hosted by the SPIN (Suicide Prevention Implementation Network) at Eagles Nest Restaurant (3500 McDonald Ave.). Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Admission: $7 adults; $6 seniors and youth (6-18); family (up to two adults and three children), $13; children under five, free. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and gift shop that supports more than 70 local Manitoba artists. Opening in the Main Gallery on Jan. 22 is “The Performance of Being,” a retrospective of work by Canadian artist Leesa Streifler. In the Kayes Family Community Gallery is “The Boy in the Forest,” a storybook collaboration project, on until March 22. Public reception on Thursday at 6 p.m. with the author and many of the artists who collaborated to bring this story to life. Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Discover “WWII Command Posts,” a temporary exhibit at the RCA Museum, showcasing Canada’s mobile command vehicles and their role in co-ordinating artillery and communications during the Second World War. Jan. 22 — Come out for a tour of Firehall No. 1 at 120 19th St. North. Tours involve seeing the emergency trucks, how things operate within Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and the museum. Tour is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those who come for a tour go home with a better idea of how the fire and ambulance services operate, what some of the history is and the knowledge that a firefighter/paramedic is their friend and service provider in the community.

Jan. 24 — Asessippi Ski Resort (Provincial Trunk Highway 83, Inglis) is hosting the Get Amped Competition. Get ready for the annual season opener that everyone loves. Whether you’re riding in it or just watching the tricks from the side, it’s going to be an awesome day on the hill. Gets underway at 1 p.m. Groups: 13 and under; 14-17 years; 18 plus. Jan. 24 — Duo526 in Concert: violinist Kerry DuWors and pianist Futaba Niekawa perform a duo recital featuring work by Amy Beach, Beethoven and Strauss at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall (270 18th St.) at 3 p.m. No admission charge. All are welcome.

Jan. 24 — The Strathclair Theatre Chorus in Concert, under the direction of David Wolfe, will take place at the Strathclair Bend Theatre at 2 p.m. This is a 50-voice mixed chorus. For tickets, you can call Crystal at 204-365-0897 or they are available at the door as well.

Jan. 25 — Westman Jams gathers on the last Sunday of each month to play classic country music at The Fringe Restaurant and Lounge on Cove Road in Shilo from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. Jan. 26-27 — Brandon University New Music Festival 2026, directed by Megumi Masaki, presents Migration, Displacement and Belonging — a festival that explores the universal journeys that shape us. Each concert reflects lived experiences, whether as immigrants, First Peoples, marginalized communities or individuals simply seeking our place in the world. Takes place at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults. BU students and Conservatory students attend at no additional charge. Tickets available at the door only. Host drums: Dakota Hotain and Riverside Dakota. Invited drums: Dakota Travels, Wooden Face, Wild Sioux and Six Shooter. Event includes junior, teen, adult and golden age categories with specials in adult categories, men’s traditional and grass, women’s jingle and fancy. Feb. 1 — Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival Concert 3 will take place in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. This concert is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Ravel and will feature Alexander Tselyakov, piano; Daniel Tselyakov, piano; Nancy Hennen, flute and Sharon Rogers, voice. Feb. 10 — Join us for Designer Bag Bingo, a night of fun and great prizes at the Royal Canadian Legion, Brandon No. 3 (560 13th St. E.) and support Habitat for Humanity Manitoba Brandon Chapter. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; bingo at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $55 each (rush seating). Includes door prize entry and 10 exciting game of bingo where each prize is a designer bag. Rainbow auction and 50/50 draw. Cash bar and refreshments.
