A small cast from the Assiniboine Theatre Company is providing some comedy relief this week at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall.
Director Lynn Andrews said “A Red Plaid Shirt” by Canadian playwright Michael G. Wilmot follows the antics of two recently retired couples.
The four cast members for the dinner theatre production are from Virden, Neepawa and Brandon and have been rehearsing for the show since November, Andrews said.
“When you have a small cast, they have a lot of lines, and so they’ve worked really hard, and they’ve … really brought these characters to life,” she said.
“It’s just a fun, light, happy play that a lot of people will be able to relate to.”
People can see the show from Wednesday to Saturday.
The play follows two couples — Marty and Deb and Fred and Gladys — as they quickly realize retirement isn’t quite what they thought it would be, Andrews said.
While Deb tries to convince Marty not to buy a motorcycle and seek adventure, Gladys is desperate for Fred to get outside and stop constantly worrying about his health.
The men compromise by signing up for a woodworking class together where they build two projects during the play, but this new hobby has its own challenges, she said.
Marty and Deb are played by Eric Gaudet and Mary Wardle and Fred and Gladys are played by George Baker and Pat Vera.
The main set of the play is a living room, but there are several vignettes that take place in a coffee shop and at the woodworking class.
Doors open for the dinner theatre comedy at 5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet with roast beef as the main dish at 6 p.m. along with a cash bar.
The first act starts at 7 p.m. Dessert will be served during a 15-minute intermission before Act 2.
“I just can’t wait for the audience to see them and just come out to enjoy a great meal and a great play, some great entertainment,” Andrews said, adding that this is the fourth show she’s directing with the company.
Tickets are $60 and can be purchased online at ticketowl.io/assiniboinetheatrecompany.
