A Benito man, who allegedly called the police on himself and fled from officers when they found him, was arrested on Friday.
Swan River RCMP received a report from a man who said he “was too intoxicated to drive” just after 12:50 a.m., Swan River RCMP said in a Facebook post.
Officers found the man in his parked vehicle in Minitonas, and when police approached, he started his vehicle and drove away with an “excessive amount of speed,” police said.
The vehicle was travelling toward Swan River, so police called officers who were patrolling in the community, and they deployed a spike belt, Mounties said.
Police said that despite having flat tires, the vehicle continued travelling north on Highway 10 and then west on Highway 10A before stopping on a rural road.
The man was unco-operative and would not unlock his car doors, prompting police to break the driver’s window, Mounties said.
The man was taken into custody and transported to the Swan River RCMP detachment to provide a breath sample, during which he assaulted an officer, Mounties said. The officer was not injured.
Bradley Boyko, 36, is charged with driving while impaired, operating a motor vehicle while impaired over 0.08, dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer, fleeing from police and failing to comply with a release order.
Boyko was remanded into custody.
