A man accused of threatening a group of youths with a knife at a Brandon hotel on Saturday evening was later arrested on unrelated warrants, Brandon Police Service told the Sun.

The police received a complaint Saturday night alleging that someone was harassing a group of young people at the hotel, Staff Sgt. Russ Paterson said in an interview on Sunday.

“We did have a complaint alleging someone with a knife,” Paterson said. “Members were able to identify that person, and that subject was taken into custody (Sunday) on unrelated warrants.”

Police were called to the Days Inn at 2130 Currie Blvd. at 10:21 p.m. and officers began searching the area, including nearby businesses, Paterson said.

“The suspect was identified (Saturday) night, but not located,” Paterson said. “He was located (Sunday) afternoon. It was the result of a different call. He was located in the area.”

Paterson said no injuries were reported.

“It was threatening,” he said. “I don’t know if it was a substantiated complaint or if it was just somebody carrying a knife … but no, there were no injuries reported. No one was harmed.”

Miranda Leybourne, a Neepawa resident who was staying at the Days Inn over the weekend, said she and her husband were at Thunderbird Bowl, located across the parking lot from the hotel, when officers arrived.

“We were at the bar on the upper floor … and my husband said, ‘Oh, there’s an RCMP officer with a gun,’” Leybourne said. “I turned around, and there were two officers with their regular guns holstered, and one who had a rifle. They kind of did a quick sweep of the room.”

Leybourne said no one appeared panicked.

“They were very professional. They didn’t cause any panic,” she said.

After finishing their drinks around 11 p.m., the couple walked back toward the hotel and noticed police vehicles circling the parking lot and surrounding businesses.

Curious about the commotion, Leybourne said she spoke with hotel staff at the front desk.

“They said there was a man who was staying at the hotel who had pulled a knife on some kids,” she said. “I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s so scary. Was anyone hurt?’ And he said, ‘No, they weren’t hurt, but they were quite scared.’”

Leybourne said front desk staff told her they called police immediately after learning about the incident and that the man fled before officers arrived.

No one from the hotel was available for comment.
