A Brandon woman has pleaded guilty to stabbing a pregnant woman in 2024.

Brooke Parisian, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated assault in Brandon’s Court of King’s Bench on Tuesday.

She was initially charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon. However, the Crown said the lawyers “finalized an agreement” late Monday afternoon for Parisian to plead guilty to aggravated assault instead of attempted murder. The remaining charge was stayed.

Crown attorney Grant Hughes read a brief summary of the facts before Parisian entered her guilty plea.

On Jan. 5, 2024, a woman, who was 33 weeks pregnant, was walking on the sidewalk near the Blue Door drop-in centre at 31A Ninth St. at around 6 p.m. when Parisian approached her from behind and stabbed her in the right shoulder.

The woman turned around and screamed. Parisian continued to walk toward the woman, but a staff member at the Blue Door intercepted and took the knife from Parisian.

Both women were brought into the Blue Door separately, and the police were called.

When officers arrived, they arrested Parisian and found she had a second knife.

“Later that night, Miss Parisian provided a cautioned statement to police where she indicated that she had intended to kill (the victim) by stabbing her in the throat, but it missed when she swung the knife,” Hughes said.

He said she also told police she had acquired the two serrated kitchen knives roughly two weeks before to “stab someone up,” the Crown said.

“She indicated that her plans to kill the victim weren’t specifically for that day. She also indicated that there was a second female on scene that she wanted to stab, but by that point there were too many people around,” Hughes said.

The Crown didn’t say whether Parisian and the victim knew each other.

Parisian underwent a forensic psychiatric assessment, which concluded that she had been experiencing symptoms of psychosis and paranoia as a result of her using methamphetamine.

Hughes said Parisian was aware that her actions were legally wrong, and the report determined she wasn’t eligible to raise a defence of not criminally responsible.

Parisian will be sentenced at a later date, following the completion of a court-ordered pre-sentence report.
