Five of Brandon’s 11 council members have confirmed that they will run in the next election this October, while another two have decided to leave the position at the end of their terms.

Mayor Jeff Fawcett and councillors Heather Karrouze (Ward 1), Shaun Cameron (Ward 4), Jason Splett (Ward 8) and Tyson Tame (Ward 10) all said they will or they intend to run in the Oct. 28 election.

Couns. Kris Desjarlais (Ward 2) and Barry Cullen (Ward 3) confirmed to the Sun they won’t seek another term.

Four councillors said they were undecided as of Friday. Coun. Greg Hildebrand (Ward 5) said he would “likely” run again in the fall. Coun. Bruce Luebke (Ward 6) said he is “still trying to decide” what he should do. Coun. Shawn Berry (Ward 7) said whether he will run again is “still under consideration.” Coun. Glen Parker (Ward 9) said he has made “no firm decision.”

Len Isleifson, a former city councillor and two-term MLA for the Progressive Conservatives in Brandon East, announced early last year he would run for the mayor’s seat.

A co-founder for Her Seat at the Table, an organization encouraging and aiding women to run for city council through resources and events, said while it has more interest now than it did after its first event in December, there isn’t anyone who has confirmed they will run.

A spokesperson for the city said staff have received one phone call regarding the election so far.

Candidate registration for the mayor position starts May 1, and for councillors on June 30. The nomination period is between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22 and the withdrawal deadline is Sept. 23.
