FIREARM CHARGES

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday after police said he had weapons on him, including a loaded sawed-off rifle.

Officers with the Brandon Police Service were called to a business in the 800 block of 18th Street after receiving a report of three “extremely intoxicated” customers who were believed to have stolen something.

Police found the three people outside the store, BPS said in a news release.

Officers sent two of them home after they returned a few items.

However, police arrested the third after they found a sawed-off rifle, bear spray and loose ammunition for the firearm in the man’s possession, police said, adding that he is on a mandatory lifetime firearms prohibition.

The man is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.

The man was also charged with two counts each of possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order and possessing a weapon, along with three counts of breaching his undertaking.

Police held the man in BPS detention cells and he was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

FIANCÉE ASSAULT

Brandon police arrested a man on Wednesday after he allegedly punched his fiancée in the face.

A 35-year-old man went to Brandon Police Service headquarters and had a conversation with police, prompting officers to go to his home, BPS said in a news release.

Officers spoke with the man’s fiancée, who had a swollen eye, and arrested the man, police said.

Police held the man in BPS detention cells and he was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

THREATS WITH WEAPON

Brandon police arrested a man on Monday after he allegedly threatened a woman with a knife.

The Brandon Police Service received a report of a man who had “become aggressive” with a 42-year-old woman who he was familiar with, causing her to run from a residence to the Brandon courthouse, which was nearby, BPS said in a news release.

The man reportedly uttered threats toward her and threatened her with a knife, all while being bound by an order not to have contact with her, police said.

Police located the suspect shortly after and arrested him.

The 26-year-old man was charged with uttering threats, breaching his release order and assault with a weapon.

He was held in BPS detention cells and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
