Members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada (UCWLC) gathered on Saturday for a fundraiser at the Ukrainian Reading Hall.

Combining traditional food-making with community spirit, proceeds from the event were to support both local and international causes.

UCWLC president Malveen Austin said the event serves multiple purposes, from maintaining the church to supporting initiatives abroad.

“It’s a fundraiser for the upkeep of our church,” Austin explained. “We also send money to Ukraine, and support things like Sunday School for the kids.”

The fundraiser revolves around hands-on preparation of traditional Ukrainian foods. Volunteers come together in the church hall to make items such as perogies, cabbage rolls and Easter bread, which are then frozen, packaged and sold to the community, she said.

“We all get together, and we make perogies. We do everything in the hall, and then we freeze them and bag them,” Austin said. “We also have a perogy lunch and raffles, with prizes donated by the women.”

Attendance at this year’s event was steady, with organizers estimating around 150 people would take part. Austin noted that the fundraiser has built a loyal following over the years.

“We kind of get the same people every year — they know it’s coming up,” she said.

While the format of the event remains largely unchanged, organizers have had to adapt to updated food preparation requirements. Unlike previous years, when members could contribute baked goods from home, all food must now be prepared in the hall’s industrial kitchen.

Despite the adjustments, the event continues to be a highlight for participants, offering more than just fundraising.

“We all get together. We’re friends, we work together,” Austin said. “We also try to involve some of the Ukrainian ladies who have come from Ukraine.”

Austin, who has lived in Manitoba for decades after moving to Brandon in 1981, said the sense of community is what keeps the tradition going year after year.
