Brandon police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a spree of tire slashings in the city’s south end last month.

Members of the Brandon Police Service arrested Tristan McKay last Thursday and charged him with mischief over $5,000 and resisting arrest, the city’s chief of police, Tyler Bates, said in an emailed statement on Monday.

On March 11, dozens of south-end residents woke up to find their vehicle tires slashed. Bates said 85 vehicles were affected.

Police previously said several vehicles had also been rummaged through during the same time frame.

Vehicles parked outside of several apartment buildings — including Arbutus Place, Fernwood Estates and The Groves — had been hit during the overnight slashing spree.

Some vehicles parked on Pine Ridge Crescent, Hawthorn Crescent, Tracey Street, Sycamore Drive and Magnolia Drive also had slashed tires.

The arrest was the “culmination of an extensive criminal investigation,” Bates told the Sun.

“There were many pieces to the puzzle, and there was no singular element that established the applicable grounds for the charge and the arrest,” he said.

McKay’s matter appeared in court on Thursday, and a judge ordered a fitness assessment for McKay at his lawyer’s request.

A fitness assessment is a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether an accused has the mental state to understand and participate in court proceedings.

McKay is scheduled to appear in court on May 19.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing as police believe there is another suspect that has not yet been located, Bates said.

Anyone with information regarding the tire slashings is urged to contact BPS or Crime Stoppers.
