The City of Brandon is hosting a community cleanup this afternoon to spruce up the city’s downtown.

The city is inviting residents, businesses and organizations to take part in the Spring Downtown Community Cleanup Day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Princess Park.

The annual event is held every spring to remove litter and debris that accumulated over the winter, the city said in a notice last month.

Light refreshments — including coffee, water, juice boxes and cookies — will be provided, along with sunscreen and hand sanitizer.

Participants will also be provided with safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, garbage pickers and sharps containers that are used for needle and drug paraphernalia.

Training on proper sharps disposal will be provided on site.

Volunteers will be assigned designated cleanup areas and provided with a map.

Last year, about 130 volunteers helped spiffy up the city’s core.

In addition to the cleanup, three prizes will also be given out, including for best- or most fun-dressed team, most garbage collected and best team photo, before-and-after photo or unique downtown find.
