COCAINE SEIZURE
Brandon police arrested a man and seized an estimated $170,000 worth of cocaine on Tuesday.
In April, members of the Brandon Police Service’s Organized Crime Section began an investigation into Joseph Melvin Hildebrand, 41, who police believed was trafficking cocaine in Brandon and surrounding communities, BPS said in a news release on Friday.
Police arrested the man during a traffic stop on Tuesday and seized his cellphone and more than $700 in cash, BPS said.
Officers searched a room at a hotel on Highland Avenue, where the accused had been residing, and seized around 1.7 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $170,000, along with packaging material, a digital scale and a suspected cutting agent, police said.
BPS charged the man with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing property obtained by crime.
He appeared in court on Thursday and will appear again next month.
WEAPON OFFENCES
Brandon police arrested a man on Wednesday after motel staff reported that a man armed with a knife was trying to smash a window.
The Brandon Police Service received the report from the motel on the 1000 block of 18th Street around 12:50 a.m.
The man didn’t get inside the motel, and no damage was reported, BPS said in a news release.
The suspect left while the caller was on the phone, BPS said. Officers found the suspect, who was acting erratically, about one block away, police said.
Police believed the man was under the influence of methamphetamine.
BPS arrested the 37-year-old man and found a knife in his jacket pocket, the release said.
He was charged with possessing a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. The man was held in BPS detention cells overnight and scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
ASSAULT OUTSIDE BUSINESS
Police arrested a man and woman on Thursday following an assault outside of a Brandon business.
A woman called 911 at around 4 p.m. and reported that a man and woman, who she knew, had assaulted her outside of a business on the 100 block of Fifth Street.
Police found the intoxicated suspects in the parking lot of a business on the 900 block of Victoria Avenue and arrested them, the Brandon Police Service said in a news release.
BPS charged the 31-year-old man and 37-year-old woman each with assault and held them in BPS detention cells with the intention of releasing them on an undertaking once sober.
The pair is scheduled to appear in court in July.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK
Mounties are investigating a serious pedestrian collision in Swan River on Friday.
RCMP were called to the collision at the intersection of Main Street and Eighth Avenue at around 12:30 p.m.
The pedestrian was “seriously injured” and transported to the hospital after a truck hit her, RCMP said in a news release.
The intersection was temporarily closed but reopened later Friday afternoon.
