MACHETE ATTACK

Brandon Police Service has closed the file on a case after investigators were unable to obtain information from witnesses or the victim of a suspected machete attack downtown.

BPS said that officers responded to a call at around 5 a.m. last Saturday in the 200 block of Third Street, where a 46-year-old man was suffering from “a significant head injury believed to have been caused by a machete,” BPS said in a news release Thursday.

He was taken by ambulance to Brandon Regional Health Centre for treatment of the non-life-threatening injury.

The victim reported to police that he had been standing outside a home with a friend when he was attacked from behind. He said he could not identify the suspect.

A 22-year-old acquaintance of the victim, who was “present at the time of the incident,” would not provide a statement, police said.

A police-dog track led from the scene to a residence on the 100 block of Fourth Street, where blood was observed in the yard and near the rear entrance, BPS said.

Five individuals, including the victim’s acquaintance, were detained and later released once sober.

Police said “all investigative avenues have been exhausted” in the case.

VEHICLE ROLLOVER

A 25-year-old man was extricated from a crashed vehicle in the 300 block of Park Avenue East on Thursday just after midnight following reports of a single-vehicle collision.

Witnesses told Brandon Police Service that a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed attempted to pass them in the area before entering the ditch and rolling several times, Brandon police said in a news release Thursday.

Another witness reported seeing the vehicle proceed through a red light shortly before the collision, police said.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services removed the driver from the vehicle and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The extent of his injuries were unknown, police said.

Blood samples were obtained as part of the investigation and police are awaiting the results.

The driver was not the registered owner of the vehicle.

WEAPON CHARGES

A 16-year-old boy faces weapon charges after he was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Brandon.

The youth had an outstanding warrant under the Youth Drug Stabilization Act, Brandon police said in a news release Thursday.

Officers located the teen in the 900 block of Rosser Avenue around 12:30 p.m. and tried to arrest him, but he fled on foot into The Town Centre parkade and building, the release said.

Police allege the boy discarded a knife, which they later recovered.

The youth was arrested without incident.

He has been charged with possessing a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer.
