A police dog took down a home invasion suspect in Dauphin after police say he turned toward an officer with a lawnmower blade.

Mounties were called to a break-in at a home on the 100 block of First Avenue Southwest at about 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old resident told police that a man smashed several windows, broke inside and assaulted him before running off. The victim declined medical help, RCMP said Thursday.

About a half hour later, officers found a suspect, who “took off running” after the Mounties told him he was under arrest, police said.

Officers called for a police dog handler to send their canine to help search near Third Street Southwest and Fourth Avenue Southwest.

Police said the suspect was found hiding under a hedge. He turned toward an officer with “a metal-edged weapon” and the handler sent the dog to apprehend him.

Officers searched the suspect and found the lawnmower blade at the scene, RCMP said.

Paramedics took him to hospital to be treated for dog bites before he was taken into custody.

Sidney Nepinak, 35, of Dauphin has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, break and enter, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief over $5,000 and failing to comply with a release order.
