Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer discharged his gun and injured a man in MacGregor on Saturday.
Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call at around 10 p.m. about an intoxicated man in MacGregor who had thrown rocks at several youths and struck one of them in the head, the Independent Investigation Unit said in a news release on Monday.
Mounties found the man at a residence on the 100 block of Hampton Street East and confronted him, the IIU said.
One RCMP officer “discharged his firearm,” the release said.
The 33-year-old MacGregor man was not shot but did sustain an injury as a result of the officer discharging his firearm, RCMP said in a news release later Monday afternoon.
STARS air ambulance flew the man to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Mounties said he has since been released.
The RCMP alerted the IIU of the incident on Saturday, and because it was an officer-involved shooting, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
The IIU is asking witnesses and anyone who has information or video footage that could help with the investigation to contact it toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
