More than 70 vehicles rolled onto the football field at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School on Friday afternoon for the school’s annual car show, despite the intermittent rain.

The event, organized by the school’s automotive technology program, brought together students, community members, vehicle enthusiasts and local organizations in a celebration of automotive culture and student achievement.

Automotive teacher Jeff Kasprick said the show has been running since 2015 and has steadily grown over the years.

“From the first one, we’ve got more and more vehicles every year,” he told the Sun.

Planning for the event begins months in advance. Automotive teacher Trent Sloane said preparations typically started with organizers reaching out to community supporters and promoting the show through local car enthusiasts.

“We kind of start planning this sometime in April, reaching out to local suppliers,” Sloane said. “Piston Ring supports us by distributing our posters. We go to the cruise nights and distribute posters there.”

The event also featured displays from Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and the Brandon Police Service, which brought emergency vehicles to the field.

“It’s a great way to involve all the supporters we have here at the school and from the community,” Sloane said.

While the weather kept some vehicle owners at home, organizers were pleased with the turnout.

“We had 70-plus cars right now, which is a little bit low from where we are normally, but the weather hasn’t been the best,” Sloane said. “If you have spent $100,000 to build a vehicle and it’s raining, you’re leaving it in the garage, you’re not bringing it out.”

In addition to the vehicle displays, the event featured other school programs.

Crocus Plains’ culinary arts students provided food, while the Rixon Suski & Alley Catz band and other bands performed for attendees. Student awards were also incorporated into the afternoon festivities. Kasprick said the additions have helped transform the gathering into more than just a car show.

“I think it’s a great way to wrap up the year and celebrate the achievements of students, but also the community that we are in and those around us who are in our focus community,” he said.

Sloane estimated that about 150 community members attended, along with roughly 600 students.
