The RM of Riding Mountain West is dealing with three bridge closures — including a key crossing on Highway 83 northwest of Inglis — due to flooding of the Shell River.

Reeve Grant Boryskavich said north-south traffic is blocked in several locations, businesses have been impacted and a chunk of the RM has significant reductions in access to emergency services due to long detours.

The disruptions come after the Shell River experienced 3.5 times greater flows this year than previous record flows.

“The fire department and paramedics, ambulances, all that kind of stuff have an extra hour commute to get to some of those places,” Boryskavich told the Sun.

“We’re just trying to find some solutions with the Manitoba government to make it easier for everybody.”

The Highway 83 bridge across the Shell River was closed following a “significant embankment failure” that compromised the integrity of the bridge, the province said.

Provincial crews are placing rock to stabilize the embankment and prevent a collapse of the bridge.

Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor told the Winnipeg Free Press Friday that a contractor had been hired and work was continuing throughout the night to restore access to the bridge.

On the same day, a provincial official told the RM they expect the closure will be long term.

“It affects everything that goes on in our municipality, that bridge,” Boryskavich said.

He added that the Asessippi Beach & Campground, situated near to the bridge, went completely underwater this season and has been compromised by the flooding.

Bridges have also been closed on Road 136 North and Road 141 North.

As a result of several closures in the area, roughly an hour of detour time has been added for vehicles travelling from Inglis to Roblin, as well as for people caught in between, such as businesses that need sewage hauled, Boryskavich said.

The RM is hoping to get repairs done on the smaller bridges in the coming weeks, following flood damage as well as damage from debris, he said.
