Police officers will be at Earl Oxford School in Brandon on Monday after a graffiti threat was found at the school last week.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Brandon Police Service will be on-site at Earl Oxford School on Monday, June 15, 2026,” the division said in an email to parents, which was obtained by the Sun.
The email said the school, located at 540 18th Street, was notified of “a threatening graffiti message in a bathroom stall referencing an incident allegedly planned” for Monday.
Brandon School Division Supt. Mathew Gustafson said the threat was discovered at the end of the day on Thursday, and the division immediately started its own investigation.
Gustafson wouldn’t share what the message said, citing the continuing investigation.
The graffiti was likely written by a student, Gustafson said, as only students, staff and a select number of visitors are able to enter the school.
Further details from the BPS about the threat and their plans for today were not available when the Sun contacted them on Saturday.
Because the threat was for the following week, the school largely operated as normal on Friday, Gustafson said, aside from some people doing the investigation. He said there was communication with parents on Friday, however.
When asked why the decision was made to keep the school open today with a police presence rather than closing the school, Gustafson said police and the division determined a shutdown wasn’t required.
“This is just a more conscious decision around ensuring that somebody is there on that day, because Monday was mentioned in the message,” Gustafson said.
He said while this type of situation is rare, he said, the division takes all threats seriously and investigates them as part of its safety plans.
