The destruction of a Shoal Lake restaurant in a fire early Tuesday morning is a “tremendous loss” to the community, the mayor of the Rural Municipality of Yellowhead said.
“It was just one of several places that the community has, as far as being able to go enjoy a meal,” Mayor Mervin Starzyk said of Blades Pizzaria.
The Hamiota Fire Department was alerted of the fire at around 3:15 a.m., fire Chief Josh Currah told the Sun.
Shoal Lake and Strathclair’s fire departments also responded, he said.
Currah said it took roughly four hours for the crews to fully extinguish the fire, but it was under control before that. He was not aware of any injuries.
He said he was not sure what caused the fire.
“It’s a total loss. The roof and everything’s gone,” he said. “All responding departments did a great job, and it’s an unfortunate loss for our community.”
Starzyk said the restaurant didn’t just serve the community but was also a great place for sports teams and people travelling through the area to stop by and enjoy “good pizza and good food.”
The Sun could not reach the Shoal Lake Fire Department for comment.
