Mounties arrested a Dauphin man and a Waywayseecappo woman last week after an officer was punched in the head while responding to a reported assault at a house party in Russell.

Russell RCMP received a report of an assault at a residence on Augusta Street East on Wednesday and responded at around 3:30 a.m.

Officers spoke with the alleged victim, a 20-year-old woman, and found out she had gone to a party at a nearby home, where another woman repeatedly punched and kicked her, RCMP said in a news release on Monday.

Paramedics treated the woman’s injuries, the release said.

RCMP members went to the home where the party was still going on, and a man, who police were familiar with, greeted them, Mounties said.

The man initially tried to shake one of the officer’s hands before punching the officer in the side of the head, police said, and the officer took the suspect to the ground and arrested him.

Officers also found the woman who allegedly assaulted the 20-year-old and arrested her, too.

Maverick Oudie, 29, of Dauphin, was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting a peace officer.

Tanis Cooke, 25, of Waywayseecappo First Nation, was charged with assault.

Both were released from custody and scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
