The provincial NDP government is following through on a promise to repave Highway 2 west of Souris.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced Tuesday the 22-kilometre stretch of the Red Coat Trail will be repaved from Souris to the road’s west intersection with Highway 21, just east of Deleau.

“Advancing work on PTH 2 reflects our focus on improving critical infrastructure while supporting economic activity in communities across the region,” Naylor said in a press release.

She said the project is currently in the design phase, and tenders are anticipated to go out this fall.

Work is expected to begin next year.

The resurfacing was a campaign promise from former NDP candidate Ray Berthelette in last summer’s Spruce Woods byelection, which he lost to current PC MLA Colleen Robbins.

In August, Berthelette committed to “advocate strongly” to the government to resurface the highway between Souris and Deleau.

About 20 kilometres of shoulder restoration on the highway will also be completed east of Highway 83, the province announced.
