A tornado tore the roof off Bernadine and Brian Brown’s century-old house south of Rossburn, about 143 kilometres northwest of Brandon, Sunday evening, even as they sheltered on the floor.
But Brian told the Sun when he got up after the tornado passed, “the room was full of debris,” he said. “If it had happened half an hour earlier, some of us would be dead and if it happened a couple hours later – if we were in bed – we’d really be dead because that southeast corner is our bedroom.”
The Browns took stock of the situation on Monday. Their horses are fine, but two of their five cats were missing as of Monday afternoon.

The wind tore apart their home’s second floor, snapped large trees and flipped vehicles in the Browns’ yard. Miraculously, the couple were not injured.
The farm property next door to the Browns was also damaged, though the neighbours were not home at the time. A detached garage and shed were destroyed, and the home’s roof was damaged.
Brian and Bernadine are still reeling from the shock of the damage to their home, which was built in 1904. The couple has lived on the farm property since 2004
