Mounties arrested a Sioux Valley Dakota Nation man on Thursday following a police chase, RCMP says.

Virden RCMP members responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation at around 2:30 p.m. last Thursday.

Mounties learned that a man had gone inside the home while he was legally not allowed to be there and refused to leave when asked, RCMP said in a news release on Monday.

When officers got to the home, the suspect left through the back door and ran away, police said.

RCMP members, with help from local First Nation Safety Officers, contained the area while waiting for the RCMP dog and drone units to arrive, police said.

Police found the suspect about 4.5 kilometres away from the residence and tracked him through a large swamp area until police service dog Czar and his handler caught up to the suspect, the release said.

During a “brief struggle,” the suspect assaulted the police dog, Mounties said. Police arrested the suspect, who was resisting, and took him to the hospital for minor injuries he sustained during the altercation with the police dog, RCMP said.

The dog was not hurt.

The man was then brought to the Virden RCMP detachment, police said.

The 29-year-old faces a single count of assaulting a police officer, along with two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking and five counts of resisting a peace officer.

He was remanded into custody.
