An SUV struck two 10-year-old girls on Thursday in a construction zone on Richmond Avenue.
Brandon Police Service reported that the girls were crossing southbound on Sixth Street when an SUV travelling westbound on Richmond Avenue hit them — striking one on the front of the vehicle, and hitting the other on the side.
The girls suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Winnipeg via ambulance for further medical treatment at the children’s hospital, BPS said.
Officers responded at 7:21 p.m. and conducted a preliminary investigation.
“The vehicle involved was towed and seized by BPS pending a Traffic Analyst’s assessment,” BPS wrote. “Mandatory alcohol screening for the operator of the vehicle was conducted, and the 72-year-old male blew zero.”
The man was released without charges at this time, and the incident remains under investigation. According to police, several bystanders and construction workers witnessed the collision, surveillance footage was retrieved from the area, and photographs were taken to document the scene.
The intersection where the collision took place is currently under construction as part of a 1.6-kilometre surface rehabilitation project funded by the Manitoba government, between 18th and Second streets.
Meanwhile, charges had not been laid as of Friday in a collision that took place earlier in the week, when an SUV hit a 16-year-old girl in the 1900 block of Richmond Avenue on Tuesday.
BPS said on Friday that the two investigations are significant, and the work often takes weeks or months to ensure all available evidence is collected and assessed.
“These investigations are not completed in a matter of days,” BPS wrote. “Investigations of this nature are thorough and involve many steps, including scene analysis, interviews with witnesses, review of available video evidence, forensic examination of the involved vehicles, and collision reconstruction by trained Traffic Analysts.”
BPS said that while the investigation continues, the team is hoping for a swift recovery for the three girls who were injured this week.
“We wish the 16-year-old female involved in the July 7 collision, as well as the two 10-year-old girls injured in July 9th’s incident, strength and healing as they recover. Our hearts are with their families during what will undoubtedly be a long and difficult journey.”
