Brandon University is searching for a new chancellor to take on the position next spring following the end of Mary Jane McCallum’s second term in the role.

Nominations are being accepted through the BU Senate until Nov. 30, the university said in a news release on Wednesday.

The chancellor serves as the formal head of the university and is chosen based on their ability to provide high-level vision, guidance and wisdom. They act in an advisory and supportive role to the president.

McCallum is in the final year of her second term and has been a “thoughtful” and “considerate” chancellor, said BU president Christine Bovis-Cnossen in the release.

McCallum, a Canadian senator, is the first Indigenous person and the first woman to serve as the university’s chancellor. She is also a dentist and a passionate advocate for health care and social justice.

“Mary Jane’s profound wisdom and passionate authenticity means she always has just the right advice for the moment, whether at the board of governors table or speaking one-on-one with a student,” Bovis-Cnossen said.

“A regular presence on campus and a true friend to BU, we know that our relationship will only continue to deepen.”

McCallum, from Barren Lands First Nation in Brochet, was first appointed in 2021 and then for a second term in 2024.

The Brandon University Act limits chancellors to two terms.

The chancellor is a member of both the university’s governing bodies — the board of governors and the senate.

They assist with fundraising campaigns and oversee each convocation, where they bring greetings and advice to the graduating class.

They also serve as a general ambassador for the university, promoting its mission and values. They occasionally represent the university at external functions and host or oversee special events.

Any member of the BU Senate can submit a nomination for the chancellorship to the executive committee. Non-senators can suggest a potential nominee to a senator who could then submit the official nomination.
