INQUEST CALLED INTO BEATING DEATH AT BCC
Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the death of a 23-year-old man who was assaulted while incarcerated at the Brandon Correctional Centre in 2024.
Autopsy results found Nehemiah Fehr’s death was a homicide after he was violently assaulted in his jail cell, the province said in a news release on Thursday.
Fehr was found unresponsive and was unable to be resuscitated. He was pronounced dead on Dec. 29, 2024.
The chief medical examiner said his immediate cause of death was due to a blunt head and neck injury.
Inquests are called under the Fatality Inquiries Act when someone died as a result of a peace officer’s use of force or if a person was in custody when they died. Inquests also explore the circumstances that led to the man’s death and find out if anything can be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.
Information about the date, time and location of the inquest will be released later.
KNIFE ATTACK
A 54-year-old man was rushed to a hospital early Thursday morning after police say his roommate attacked him with a butcher knife.
The victim sustained injuries to his hand and face with a significant laceration to his neck, Brandon police said in a news release on Thursday.
Police were called to an apartment on the 3500 block of Willowdale Crescent after receiving a report of an assault with a weapon around 2:45 a.m.
A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with aggravated assault. The suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
ASSAULT BY CHOKING
A 20-year-old man has been charged with assault by choking, Brandon police said.
A woman went to the Brandon Police Service on Wednesday shortly before noon to report an assault that occurred the day before on the 500 block of Fourth Street.
Police said officers located the accused. He was later released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.
COCAINE SEIZED
A 19-year-old man faces a charge of possessing cocaine for the purpose of drug trafficking.
Shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday, police pulled over a vehicle in the 100 block on First Street North. The driver was initially detained after officers observed open liquor in the vehicle.
Police further investigated and seized approximately four ounces of cocaine packaged in 10 baggies. A cellphone, digital scale and a small amount of cash were also seized, police said.
The suspect was released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.
IMPAIRED CHARGES
A 36-year-old woman involved in a single-vehicle collision in the spring has received new impaired driving charges.
The accused, who remains in custody at the Women’s Correctional Centre, was advised of her new charges of operating a vehicle while impaired and while exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
The blood-alcohol analysis from the collision on May 11 showed the driver had 225 mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood, police said.
The woman was scheduled to appear in court Thursday on the new charges.
FATAL STABBING
WINNIPEG — City police have a suspect in custody after a daytime stabbing in downtown Winnipeg on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 58-year-old woman.
Officers responded to the 300 block of Portage Avenue after receiving a report about the incident around 2:45 p.m. Arriving officers found Helen Annie Spence suffering from severe and life-threatening injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday.
Spence, a member of Grand Rapids First Nation who had been living in Winnipeg, was transported to the hospital in critical condition where she died of her injuries, the release said.
The suspect fled before officer arrived, but was later identified by investigators from the homicide unit, police said.
Shante Trinity Paul, 23, was arrested without incident early Wednesday morning. She is charged with second degree murder and remains in custody, the release said.
