A new candidate has thrown his name in the Ward 9 councillor race for the municipal election in October.
Scott Pedlow — a long-term Brandon resident who registered to run on Monday — said he believes now is the time to step into the role.
“I’ve been an advocate outside as a citizen for a number of years to the City of Brandon and city council,” Pedlow said in an interview Wednesday.
Pedlow said he grew up in the east end and spent all his “formative years and schooling” in the neighbourhood.
He says he wants to be another voice in the city and not overlook the small necessities.
“What I’m looking to do is just be open and transparent and be another person talking to some of the bare-bones stuff that I think in the City of Brandon we need to focus on,” he said.
“A big thing is cleanliness and graffiti, just take care of the roads, sidewalks. A lot of that stuff is minor little things at times, but that becomes very important as far as the function of the city,” Pedlow said.
Norah Woychyshyn, the only other candidate running in Ward 9 as of Wednesday, said she thinks a little competition will be good, but she’s undeterred.
“I just started my door-to-door (campaign) … And the response has been very positive,” Woychyshyn said.
“I don’t know the person. I know a lot of people. So, I think he’ll be surprised when he goes knocking on doors because I know a lot of people in the ward,” she added.
Pedlow said he would be “open all the time to public engagement.”
“I just think it’s time that I stepped up a bit and had a seat at the table and try to express some of the concerns that residents of Ward 9 have,” he said.
Current Ward 9 Coun. Glen Parker announced his departure from politics in May after three terms on council. The municipal election is on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
