A woman was killed and a man was injured after they were struck by an ATV in Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation on Monday.
RCMP were called to the scene around 10 p.m. after receiving a report of an all-terrain vehicle striking two pedestrians in the First Nation, located about 45 kilometres northeast of Swan River.
The pedestrians — a 39-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man — were walking in the community on Porcupine Bay when they were hit from behind by a man driving an ATV, Mounties said in a news release on Wednesday.
The woman sustained most of the impact from the collision and suffered severe injuries, police said.
RCMP, paramedics and community members all tried to save the woman’s life, but she died at the scene.
The man was taken to a hospital with multiple non-life-threatening injuries.
RCMP said the driver was uninjured and was arrested outside his house, not far from the scene, while he was standing near his ATV.
A 21-year-old man from Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation faces several charges in connection with the incident, police said.
An RCMP spokesperson said Wednesday that charges are in the process of being sworn against the suspect and did not provide details on what the charges are.
He was released from custody on multiple court conditions.
RCMP seized the ATV and continue to investigate.
